Drama and Winners Triangle

The original idea for the drama triangle came out of Transactional Analysis and was invented by Stephen Karpman, a student of Carl Jung, the renowned Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist. The drama triangle shows what happens when communication backfires and people derail in a relationship. For example: Bill shoots a football against a window and by accident breaks the glass. John runs out of the front door and calls him a stupid irresponsible idiot. Bill calls John … etc. You can imagine where this leads. The clash that ensues leaves everyone angry and unhappy and blaming each other. Nobody sees a way out. In the drama triangle everyone is trapped by their own behavior and it makes change seem impossible. When behavioral patterns determine actions love often is hard to find.  The idea that may stimulate this struggle is that others not only need to respect our needs but should also take care of them. This creates an expectation whereas in fact it mostly is our own confusion around what we feel and need that makes the situation seem hopeless. The drama triangle is dominated by  the demands participants make, the powerlessness they feel and the personal sacrifice they engage in. Players in the drama triangle are blind to the positive intent others may have and so remain trapped within their own perspectives and judgments.

The triangle has three players, namely:

Rescuer: I’m okay, you’re not okay
Victim: I’m not okay, you’re not okay
Prosecutor: I’m okay, you’re not okay

If you recognize others and yourself in one of these positions, you know exactly what I am talking about. Fortunately there is a way out and that is what we call the Winners Triangle. Although Empathic Communication makes it easy to stay out of the Drama Triangle, at times you may be unwillingly sucked into it none the less. This training will give you the insight in how this works and help you to build the skill to get out and stay out of the drama. You will learn to remain assertive, vulnerable and supportive and become an anchor for others.
